Avril’s first single in 5 years, “Head Above Water” from her upcoming (untitled) 6th album, is NOW AVAILABLE! Get this song wherever you buy/listen to music.
I was really surprised by this – in a good way! Her vocals are strong and it has a sort of haunting “Alice” feel. The imagery is very prominent and I can’t wait to see the music video! It’s not poppy like her past, so not sure how radio will deal with it, but for us waiting 5 years, this is a solid debut!!
I’d love to hear what you think of the song in the comments.
“Head Above Water”
I’ve gotta keep the calm before the storm
I don’t want less, I don’t want more
Must bar the windows and the doors
To keep me safe, to keep me warm
Yeah, my life is what I’m fighting for
Can’t part the sea, can’t reach the shore
And my voice becomes the driving force
I won’t let this pull me overboard
God, keep my head above water
Don’t let me drown, it gets harder
I’ll meet you there, at the altar
As I fall down to my knees
Don’t let me drown, drown, drown
Don’t let me, don’t let me, don’t let me drown
So pull me up from down below
‘Cause I’m underneath the undertow
Come dry me off and hold me close
I need you now, I need you most
God, keep my head above water
Don’t let me drown, it gets harder
I’ll meet you there, at the altar
As I fall down to my knees
Don’t let me drown, drown, drown
Don’t let me, don’t let me, don’t let me drown
Don’t let me drown, drown, drown
I keep my head above water, above water (don’t let me, don’t let me, don’t let me drown)
And I can’t see in this stormy weather
I can’t seem to keep it all together
And I can’t swim the ocean like this forever
And I can’t breathe
God, keep my head above water
I lose my breath at the bottom
Come rescue me
I’ll be waiting
I’m too young to fall asleep
God, keep my head above water
Don’t let me drown, it gets harder
I’ll meet you there, at the altar
As I fall down to my knees
Don’t let me drown, drown, drown
Don’t let me, don’t let me, don’t let me drown
Don’t let me drown, drown, drown
I keep my head above water, above water (don’t let me, don’t let me, don’t let me drown)

Heyy, do you know when is there going to be a music video?

Probably not for a bit… They’ll want to promote the lyric video

Wow, this is a really powerful song. Avril has had some stand-out tracks, not necessarily singles, that have dealt with heartbreak, but I imagine songwriting takes a very different turn when you really think your life is over. I’m so glad Avril is doing okay and that she was at least able to create some great music as a result of her suffering!

I really, really enjoy this song. Maybe it’ll land some airplay thanks to the catchy chorus and the fact that most hits right now are kind of depressing but the radio likes to play the same 6 songs from three years ago over and over so I guess we’ll see.
I’m really looking forward to the music video, though!
