Congratulations Avril!
Avril’s first single in 5 years, “Head Above Water” from her upcoming (untitled) 6th album, is NOW AVAILABLE! Get this song wherever you buy/listen to music.
I was really surprised by this – in a good way! Her vocals are strong and it has a sort of haunting “Alice” feel. The imagery is very prominent and I can’t wait to see the music video! It’s not poppy like her past, so not sure how radio will deal with it, but for us waiting 5 years, this is a solid debut!!
I’d love to hear what you think of the song in the comments.
Are you ready? “Head Above Water” officially gets released tomorrow and Avril posted the single cover on Instagram and Twitter. BEAUTIFUL!
The song will be out WORLDWIDE at 12 PM PST (3PM EST)
Avril has posted a 30 second preview of the “Head Above Water” lyric video, most likely being released on the 19th as well. Anyone else love the strength of her voice in this? WOW
Other than the first one, videos have no sound. It’s not your device.
After Avril performed “Head Above Water” for the very first time on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! (air date still TBA), she signed some autographs and took pictures with fans. Avril wore a similar gorgeous, angelic white dress that we will get to see in the music video for the song. Fans who were at the live taping, described the song as “strong vocals, gospel sounding”.
Read her letter below (and be prepared to tear up!)
Hi guys,
Iâm so excited to finally be able to announce the first single off my new album along with its release date. Five years have gone by since I released my last album. I spent the last few years at home sick fighting Lyme Disease. Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music Iâm really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly. Truly… by keeping my spirits up, having goals to reach and a purpose to live for, my music helped to heal me and keep me alive.
Thank you for waiting so patiently as I fought through and still continue to fight, the battle of my lifetime. The first song I am choosing to release is called âHead Above Water.â It is also the first song I wrote from my bed during one of the scariest moments of my life. I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down. I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going under water and I just needed to come up for air. Like I was in a river being pulled in a current. Unable to breathe. Praying to God for Him to help me just keep my head above the water. To help me see through the stormy weather. I grew closer to Him. My mother held me. In her arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story. I later met a beautiful soul, Travis Clark, and we sat down at the piano and sculpted the rest of the song. Then I took it to the genius, Stephan Moccio and love what he did to the music.
From Avril’s official website. Her new bio:
Over the course of Avrilâs sixth full-length album and debut for BMG, she holds nothing back. She details each trial and tribulation from a perspective of triumph and emerges stronger than ever before. Youâre hearing the songstress as she was always meant to sound. âThis is me and my fight,â she affirms. âThis album tells my story.â
That story seems unbelievable from afar. One difficult night in particular while she fights for her life, a lyrical idea rushes through her body. Those words comprise âHead Above Water.â
âIâm in a battle,â she sighs. âOne night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed âGod, please help to keep my head above the water.â In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.â
Nothing has officially been announced yet, but a new song was registered on ASCAP. âHead Above Water,â written by Avril along with Travis Clark (We The Kings) and Stephan Moccio.
The title fits the visuals that Avril has recently described . The music video will feature her in water and at a recent album cover photo shoot, Avril said she was “wrecking her makeup” being in under water.
Whatever the first single is â âHead Above Waterâ or something else â it will be released this month (rumored date is September 19). A good guess is that it will touch on Avrilâs recent battle with Lyme disease.
